Monthly Catch Up - Quinn!

Wow, I am so far behind...here is my attempt to catch up on Quinn's monthly posts!

12 days:
Quinn had his first visit with Dr. Mishu at 12 days old where he had gained 12 ounces since being born.  He weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 1/4 inches long.  He was nursing well at this point (usually about 15 minutes total, every 2 to 3 hours), and was sleeping/eating/pooping as they all do when they are that teeny.  Still in newborn diapers, I dread the day he's not!  I love the teeny-ness of him!  We still had family in the house around the clock (Matt's parents were here initially, then my mom was here for a week), and things were going so smoothly!  Quinn was sleeping in his bassinet beside our bed, although most nights he ended up sleeping on one of our chests!  Love those sweet moments, but we knew it was a bad habit to get into!  :)

 1 month:
Quinn didn't have an "official" one month checkup, but we did visit the doctor's office where he was 9 pounds 7 ounces.  We were there for, what I assumed was, acid reflux issues.  It seems that the second all of our family left - Quinn decided that was the time to start screaming nonstop from 10 am to 8 pm.  For a week.  It was terrible, and I couldn't do anything to help him - I felt horrible.  I could tell he was hungry, but didn't want to eat - and was puking like crazy (not just spit up folks, like puking so far it hits the wall in his nursery!).  Poor kiddo, I just wanted him to get some relief....and some sleep wouldn't be so terrible either.  With the symptoms I described, Dr. Patterson prescribed some Zantac for him which we were on for a week...and when I called back with the report that he was still screaming in pain during/after feedings, they added Prevacid to his morning routine.  That finally seemed to do the trick.  Thank goodness!  So, after 2 weeks of not being able to comfort my sweet boy...he finally was getting some relief.  Nursing got better, and we all ended up with more sleep!  We didn't venture out much during this time because he was so uncomfortable, but when we did...it was cause for screaming as well.  It seems that we have a car seat hater on our hands!

2 months:
Quinn's 2 month checkup with Dr. Mishu went well, everything is on track and going well!  Quinn weighed 12 pounds 3 ounces and was 23 inches long.  He's right at about 50th percentile for both.  He got his first set of shots, which was harder for his momma I'm sure.  He cried for a few minutes, but with his paci and some extra cuddles he was back to normal quickly.  He slept for most of the day afterwards, but overall no ill affects.  He is wearing size 1 diapers, although we will soon be in size 2.  His thighs are so sweet and chunky, I just want to much on them.  He is still eating every 3 hours (sometimes even sooner), and has begun to eat for 10 minutes tops.  He is definitely not a kiddo that will "nurse on demand"....if he is not hungry, my 'offer' is refused.  And once his belly is full, he is done and there is no convincing him to keep going!  Needless to say, our freezer is getting a workout....I am pumping almost after every feeding and storing up a good supply for when Q goes to school in July.  On the weekends, he is getting a bottle of breast milk....giving mommy a break and daddy some good middle of the night bonding time.  He takes it really well, and doesn't seem to mind transitioning back and forth from bottle to breast.  In terms of sleeping, we have found the most amazing invention - the 'rock and play' sleeper by Fisher Price.  We purchased this soon after Quinn's diagnosis of reflux....it's a  little inclined bassinet type thing.  Small enough it fits right next to my bed, but keeps him inclined to assist with the reflux.  LIFE SAVER.  He went from sleeping for a hour or two at a time to sleeping for at least one good 5 to 6 hour stretch each night.  We feel lucky to be at this point considering the rough start we had.  I have gotten a few smiles out of our sweet boy, but not so consistent that I can confidently say "that was his first smile!" - I am sure it's coming soon!  He still hates his car seat....as in feverish screaming when he's put in the car.  If I'm next to him and touching him, sometimes we can avoid the screaming....but every day when we go to pick up Nashman from school, he screams.  There and back.  It's exhausting and I feel terrible for him...but better to get where we're going than to keep stopping to comfort him when the screaming commences once I get back in the drivers seat anyway.  :)  Yes, we have a high maintenance little guy on our hands!

3 months:
No 3 month check up, but we are guessing he is pushing 14 pounds.  Maybe because it seems all we do is bounce him around all day, haha!  He is definitely picky about how he is held...he likes to be facing out just like his big brother did.  He is still on both Zantac and Prevacid and the reflux seems to be under control.  He is starting to get squirmy in his swaddle and rock n play....not sure how much longer we'll be able to force that sleeping situation.  He is sleeping for about 4 hour stretches now, so I am up twice a night to feed him. I DREAD the transition that is ahead of us...our plan is to make it through our beach trip over Memorial Day and then begin the transition (first to the crib, then out of the swaddle).  Cross your fingers!  Quinn is wearing size 2 diapers, and mostly 3 months, and 3-6 month clothes.  Newborn sizes have been in the back of the drawer for a while now, but I just recently packed them up and put them in the attic.  Quinner is much more aware of his surroundings these days...loves to watch Roscoe and his big brother.  He loves to look at books with bright colors and patterns, but never sits still.  He is always moving and kicking, the kid has to be exhausted!  :)  I got my first "intentional" smile April 12, on a morning where I really needed it.  We had a rough night and I was so exhausted, and not really looking forward to the day.  But, when you see that sweet smile - it changes everything.  So in love with this little guy...despite all of his high  maintenance quirks.

3 months old!

4 months:
Our mighty Quinn now weighs 14 pounds and 10 ounces and is 25 1/4 inches long.  He is about 25th percentile for weight and 50th percentile for height.  He didn't gain as much weight as Dr. Mishu wanted him to, so she's suggesting that we hold off on starting cereal until 5 or 6 months.  He needs more calories, and that means my milk...not empty 'rice' calories.  I can tell he's getting ready though - licking his lips and very interested in our food!  But, for now, we're still nursing exclusively - still every 3 hours usually.  The little stinker has totally reverted in the sleeping department.  Mommy and daddy are TIRED.  We made it through vacation in the swaddle/rock n play, and began the transition when we got back.  Instead of the phased approach we had hoped for - we've went cold turkey on both.  He is busting out of his swaddle and squirming out of the rock n play.  So, he is now "learning" to sleep in his sleepsack and his crib at once.  A few hours at a time, if we're lucky.  Lord have mercy, it is rough.  My patience is waning, but I know that this phase too will pass....and one day I will look back and wish for some more middle of the night cuddles.  So, we're working through it - just with bags under our eyes and multiple cups of coffee.  :)  Quinner found his toes and thinks that they are particularly yummy.  (If only he could get calories through his toes...Dr. Mishu would be thrilled!)  He is a drool monster, and even though I thought it may be early signs of teething - Dr. Mishu says no, just lots of drool.  :)  In big "first" news....Quinn rolled over for the first time on June 5!  He rolled from front to back, and a few days later rolled from back to front.  Our strong little man!  He still loves his big brother and "talks" to everyone he sees.  His belly laughs are the best ever, and we've been lucky enough to catch a few of them on camera.  He is sitting in his bumbo seat for a few minutes at a time, normally when the rest of the family is eating - so he can enjoy the meal with us!

18 months - update

Our little Nashman is 18 months old!  At 22 pounds 1 ounce, and 31 inches tall....he is keeping pace around the 10th percentile for weight and 15th for height.  Dr. Mishu tells us repeatedly that he's not going to be the star center.  Point guard maybe?  :)

Here are a few things our love bug is up to these days:
  • LOVES the pool and the water.  Hates being contained, so any type of life jacket or floatie is pretty much out of the question.  He wants to hang out with us in the water, so that means he is in our arms most of the time.  He will jump off the side of the pool, and let you dunk his head under the water.  He will most definitely be ready for swim lessons next summer!
  • Learning to maneuver the stairs....the rule in our house is to sit on his bottom and scoot down.  He does well most of the time, but gets antsy and wants to walk.  He IS a coordinated little guy, but still makes me nervous....gates are still fully functional in our house.
  • Our kiddo is coordinated!  He will kick and throw any kind of ball you give him - by far his favorite game.  He is also really into coloring right now (his favorite colors are brown and black?) and stacking blocks.
  • Nash can name most "normal" toddler animals and the sounds they make...of course half of the words only Matt and I can understand - but we're ok with that!  We know he is communicating and we are so proud of him!
  • Eating is quickly becoming more of a struggle....he seems to eat fine at school with his friends, but is getting more picky at home.  We'll see how it all plays out, but it looks like we may have a mac-n-cheese and PB&J kind of kiddo.
  • In terms of schedule, Nash usually wakes between 6:30 and 7:00 and takes about a 2 hour nap after lunch, with bedtime between 7:30 and 8:00.  Sleeping is going pretty well at this point, not perfect of course - but we've settled into a pretty good routine!
 Happy 18 months, sweet boy!

15 months - update

Our little guy is changing so quickly these days – learning new things, saying new things, getting into things, testing his limits, and being as cute as ever!  At his 15 month checkup with Dr. Mishu, he weighed 21 pounds and was 29 1/2 inches tall.  That’s the 10th percentile for each.  Imagine that – we have a short kiddo.  :) He was hitting all the milestones she expected him to meet, so that was good to hear.  Here are a few other things he is up to at 15 months:
  • The transition to the toddler room at school is complete and he is doing really well.  At first, he had to be held by a teacher and distracted by looking for birds and squirrels outside while we left the room after saying our goodbyes.  He is getting better, and soon I am sure he will be jumping in to play with his friends like he did in the baby room.  The only thing that really bothers me is the number of bites that he comes home with…I KNOW that this is the “biting” age and that it is going to happen, I just wish it wasn’t happening to my sweet baby.  Luckily he has only been the “bitee” and not the “biter” yet.  Although, I’m sure the day is coming!
  • Nash is finally eating some meat for us…and even though it is really just fish sticks and chicken nuggets, we’ll take it.  I would love for him to be interested in what WE eat, but he’s not there quite yet.  He still refuses “real” veggies and is still eating baby food veggies.  His pedi insists this is fine, it keeps him from losing the taste for the veggies, until he doesn’t want to be spoon fed by us anymore.  His favorite foods are any fruit (especially bananas, blueberries, grapes, pineapple) and any kind of cheese.  He’s not a big fan of pasta (even macaroni and cheese!) or veggies that aren’t pureed.  His teachers are school says he is a great eater and eats most things – probably because he sees his friends eating everything!
  • His vocabulary is exploding lately…he regularly says momma, daddy, Roro (Roscoe), beh (bird), ball, duck, bubble, fish, caca (cracker), nana (banana), buh (bug)…but will repeat most of the things we ask him too.  He knows what sounds cows, ducks, and dogs make.
  • His favorite games right now are any type of hide and seek – preferably behind chairs and curtains.  He is also very into his little push popper (you know, the cheapest birthday present we bought him) and any type of ball.  Roscoe popped his soccer ball – but he loves to kick the balls around.
  • Books are huge with Nashman right now…some of my favorite moments are when he picks out a book, walks up to me or Matt, turns around and scoots his little booty right into my lap for the story.  Makes me melt everytime.
  • Bathtime is one of his favorite times – “tubby” time is what we call it (thanks to the St. Francis’!).  He has a little fountain and a ball hoop in the tub that he loves…but usually his favorite toy is the cup we use to rinse his head.  He loves to drink the water (yes, gross…how do you stop it though??), and loves a bubble bath.
  • Nash is consistently sleeping through the night.  He usually goes down around 7:30 and wakes up around 6:30.  His bedtime routine consists of bath, lotion/pajamas, allergy medicine, last drink of water, teeth brushing (which he despises), and books.  He’s starting to reject long periods of rocking and cuddling before bedtime…he would rather just be laid down most nights.  This makes me sad, so I am soaking up all the cuddles I can until he completely refuses.  He still sleeps with his pacifier and a few lovies – although he is not quite attached to any specific lovie just yet.
  • Nash is obsessed with being outside, is jealous of Roscoe when he is outside, and throws a fit when we bring him inside.  I love the fact that he loves being outside, but the temper tantrums are quite dramatic!
  • Some of Nash’s favorite “no-no’s” are the dog bowls, toilets, plants, and the fireplace.
  • A few fun stories from the last few months that I want to write down before I forget:
    •  During our trip to Indiana over mothers day weekend (future post), my nieces Macy and Mya called me “mamie” instead of Amy.  When we got back to Nashville, our little guy woke up the next morning….and instead of the “momma!”, I got “mamie!”.  That went on for a few days, but luckily wore off quickly!
    • For a few days in a row, Nash kept walking up to our fireplace and saying “bird, bird, bird” (one of his favorite words).  After bedtime one night, Matt and I were watching hockey playoffs when we heard chirps up the chimney!  Nash wasn’t just repeating one of his favorite words – he was telling us we had birds living in our chimney!  (For the record, they are still there…and most likely an endangered bird that we are not allowed to “remove” until they migrate back to Peru in the winer!)
    • I watch American Idol lately, mostly because I am in a pool at work that I am close to winning, but lately when I watch it and Nash sees/hears everyone cheering and clapping for the contestants -  he mimics the claps and screams and cheers.  So cute!
    • Nash thinks it's funny when he smells his feet (we blame Nannie and Opa for this trick!).  Quite hilarious!

Here are some pictures over the last few months of our favorite little guy!

11 months - update

Do I really have an 11 month old?  Whew!  Here is what our perfect little man is up to these days...
  • Nash is walking all over the place...he thinks he is so good at it, he prefers to walk with his hands behind his back!  I've yet to capture a picture of it - but it's so cute (and a little scary when he falls!).
  • He loves pushing things - his toys, his chairs.  He prefers things that he can push to the point they tip over.  The little play table he has - endless hours of fun tipping it over, as long as mom or dad is there to put it upright for him so he can continue the game.
  • Nash has 3 teeth on bottom and 3 teeth on top...so he's still a little lopsided, but I'm sure those other ones will be joining us soon!  We've started working on brushing his teeth at night before bedtime.  He'd rahter just play with the toothbrush than let us actually put it in his mouth and brush.  Hopefully that will get better as time goes on and he gets used to the brushing.
  • He knows what a nose is - although he won't point to his own, he loves to point at momma's nose and daddy's nose!  He can point to Roscoe and points at mom and dad too.
  • Peekaboo is definitely a favorite game - anything he can put over his face to get you to say the word, he will.
  • Our Nashman is a sucker for bathtime.  LOVES IT.  He has a little star toy that make a little water fountain - he can't get enough of it.  The bath is full of toys - squirt toys and cute little turtles.  He has no fear of water and doesn't mind us pouring water over his head.  There aren't many things better than have a squeaky clean, sweet smelling, post-bath baby in your arms.  :)
  • We're still working on sleeping through the night...we still get up to soothe him by patting his back and giving him his pacifier.  With all of the ear infections he has had, we're never sure if he's actually healthy - so making him cry it out is just not an option for us at this point.  We'd rather have him feel safe and secure knowing we are there, especially if he is not feeling well.  Once the ear infections are resolved (ENT  consult on Dec. 30), maybe we'll feel more comfortable about really working on a sleep solution.
  • Nash is still on 4 bottles a day - although we'll be working down to 3 in about a month.  He gets breakfast and lunch at school, a snack at school, and then dinner at home (with Roscoe by his side, of course).  Nash went from refusing babyfood to refusing tablefood...so he's back to eating babyfood for the moment.  Everyone says just be patient - they all go through these stages - so that's what we're doing!  Or attempting to do - we just keep offering him all kinds of food in hopes that one of these days he'll take us up on it!
I can't believe the next monthly update will be a ONE year update!  He's growing up so fast...

What a ham!

Get this thing off of me!

So big!

Momma's little hoosier fan!

What did you say?  Don't feed the dog?  Don't worry mom....

I'll only feed him a little...

Look at our faces...do you really think you can be mad at us?

10 months - update

These months just keep flying by!!  And our little dude keeps growing and learning and amazing us with his cuteness every day!

Here is a little 10 month update:

  • He is officially repeating "ma ma" and "da da" when you ask him to.  So sweet!  We're working on "dog", but not quite there yet.
  • Officially able to grab cheerios and puffs with his thumb and forefinger - assuming that no one interupts his concentration.  It is the cutest thing!  In addition to puffs and crunchies...his favorite foods are bananas and yogurt.  He's on a kick where he's refusing babyfood....so he's eating a lot of cottage cheese, string cheese, pasta, pita, toast, green beans, and potatoes.
  • Nash is still getting four bottles a day, but we know we're getting close to having to wean him down to three - and eventually (by 15 mo our pedi suggests) none.
  • We are absolutely in full baby proof mode - he is into everything! He wants the television, computer, remotes, fireplaces, dog bowls, laundry baskets, you name it!
  • Nash is quickly learning the word "no".  Well, he's at least hearing it a lot for many reasons listed above.  He will stop and look at us when we say "no", but most oftentimes will return to what he is doing.  I know he's just learning, so we're working on consistency and explanation (no, that's hot....no, that's not nice) and redirecting his behavior.
  • He ZOOMS around the house on his hands and knees and is so close to walking.    He's taken a few steps on his own, but not enough for us to consider him an official "walker".  Crusing, no problem.  Letting go of momma and daddy's hands...not quite yet.
  • Still size 3 diapers - although we may make the move to size 4 at nighttime, he wakes up with a soaked diaper.
  • Nash is a professional at the 'drop it' game.  LOVES IT. Especially with his sippy cup of water and in his booster seat at the table.  Can't tell you how "fun" this is.  AHHH.  Roscoe, of course, loves the drop it game when played with cheerios or cheese.
  • Nash has been on antibiotics again for another double ear infection....I really hope he can get healthy and stay healthy soon!
  • This is such a fun age - you can just see him taking everything in and absorbing everything around him.  He wants to touch/taste everything!
  • Nash has 4 teeth - two middle ones on bottom and two on top!  The ones on top are not the middles ones though...they are his "lateral incisors" (fangs, really).  Just in time for Halloween!  Unfortunately, he's not really into letting us see in his mouth, let alone get a picture - so you'll just have to envision how cute he is with fangs.  :)

    9 months old!

Has another month went by this quickly??  Here is what our Nashman is up to:

    • At his 9 month well baby checkup, we were told Nash was perfect.  Imagine that.  :)  He weighted in at 17 pounds and 9 ounces and 27 inches long.  He's staying consistently around the tenth percentile for height and 25th percentile for weight.
    • Nash is a babbling machine.  We don't quite consider him saying any words yet - but ba ba ba, da da da, ma ma ma - he's getting there!
    • Nash has become a pro at finger foods - although we should really call them fist foods.  It takes his whole hand to get the one crunchy in his mouth.  The two finger dexterity will come soon enough - right now, the fisting of food is pretty cute.
    • Nash is still getting four bottles a day, about 6 ounces each.  He takes most of his bottles, but at daycare he seems to be quite distracted and not finish the entire bottle.
    • Who knew the cheapest sippy cups would be the ones that don't leak?  Go figure.  But hey - at least we found them, and Nash LOVES them!  He is so proud of himself when he drinks his water with his meals.  So cute.
    • Nash is still wearing size 3 diapers - we're buying the Sam's brand at this point.  Wishing we had a Costco, but Sam's will do.  As long as we can keep him still enough to actually change his diaper!
    • Nash's 9 month birthday was spent in his new house - which warrants a post all of it's own - but that will have to come later.  We're still working on actually getting moved in and settled, but Nash seems to be adjusting well.
    • We do our best to keep his bedtime routine consistent, and his sleep patterns seem to have evened out.  He's mostly sleeping through the night - if he wakes, usually a few soothing pats on the back and he's back out.

    8 months old!

Our Nash man just continues to get cuter by the month, I swear he does.  He is so busy and so full of life, he is hard to keep up with sometimes!  We wouldn’t have it any other way, and it is such a joy to get to watch him grow and learn and become a sweet little boy.

    • Nash is starting to eat more solids now...he's enjoying puffs and veggie crisps and dried fruit crumbles...things that easily melt in his mouth.  He does pretty well with them, and Roscoe is there to be SURE nothing hits the ground.
    • The bottle routine has stayed pretty much the same, although with new teeth coming in - he's not quite as excited about his bottle some days.
    • We've introduced a sippy cup, and he's doing OK with it....just not very interested at this point.  I'm sure it will come with time, but right now he'd rather just play with it and bang it around.  And of course we haven't found ones that don't leak...
    • Nash's favorite toys are growing in size...he's now playing with toys that he pushes around.  Yes, you read that right.  PUSHES.  As in, walks behind the sucker as it moves across the room.  Anyone with tips on how to persuade an 8 month old he doesn't need to grow up so fast?
    • Still in size 3 diapers, but becoming quite the wiggle worm during diaper changes.  The twist is officially perfected.
    • We are celebrating Nash's 8 month birthday by  moving into the new house...so we're packing around here.  As I said before...I'm sure we're in for another big adjustment time in the sleep department, but at least we know this one should be for good.
    • We'll visit the Dr. next month for his 9 month well baby visit, so we're not quite sure how big Nash is, but he's by far the smallest one of his age at daycare.  His buddies Eli, Adaya, and Lanie are quite the chunkers!
     Quite the cute cheeseball, huh?

      7 month update

Our love bug is 7 months old...can you believe it?  Here is a recap of our favorite little boy at 7 months old:
      • Homemade baby food is by far Nash's favorite - peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, pears...loves them all.  I steamed them, pureed them to a nice consistency in the food processor and froze them in ice cube trays - worked great and he LOVES them!  We'll see how often I have time for that, considering we're getting ready for another move!
      • Nash is still on sensitive formula and taking about 4 bottles a day with food for breakfast and dinner.  Usually about 6 ounces every bottle.
      • Nash has officially outgrown some of his baby gear - namely the swing and the bouncer...he can wiggle himself to the point they'd flip if we weren't right there!  To storage they go...
      • Size 3 diapers are now in stock at the Murphy household, and we really liked the Sam's Club brand.  We've gotten to the point where we're not picky about what he wears...we don't seem to have a problem with blowouts (knock on wood).  Huggies, club brand, Pampers - whatever is on sale!
      • Now that we're nice and comfortable and settled in the apartment...Nash is sleeping well once again.  Of course that means we'll be moving soon (hopefully in a few weeks!) and the process will start over.  Whew!  We're ready to be in a permanent place, that's for sure!
      • In the cute department...he tops the charts.  He's so interactive now and absolutely recognizes mommy and daddy.  What a great feeling!
      Quickly outgrowing the lion.

        6 months - Nash's half birthday!

Time just keeps moving so fast...here is a 6 month update!
        • Nash's 6 month checkup went well.  His new doctor is Dr. Sara Patterson and we really liked her.  Matt wasn't able to come with us because of a court date, but my mom happened to be in town so she came with me.  He weighed 15 pounds and 5 ounces and almost 26 inches long.
        • We have not been able to find a baby food Nash doesn't like.  He's liked everything from sweet potatoes (one of his favorites) to peas and green beans.  We've added fruit and his favorite by a mile is bananas (see - he IS his momma's boy!), but again - nothing he does like.  I hope to find time soon to make some of our own babyfood and see how that goes.
        • Nash is becoming very ambidextrous...he's so good at picking up things with either hand, switching toys from hand to hand, and being excited about his favorite toys.  His favorite toys right now are definitely balls - all kinds, especially the ones designated for Roscoe dog!
        • We are still in size 2 diapers, although they may not last very much longer.
        • Nash's travel schedule has calmed down a bit lately, so he's starting to settle into more of a routine here in the apartment.  He's still waking up about once in the middle of the night, and seems quite unhappy.  He doesn't really seem hungry, but definitely not comfortable.  At this point, I still get up with him consistently because I'm not working yet and Matt is.
        • Nash is officially done nursing.  He pretty much weaned himself from twice a day (about a month ago) to once early in the morning for the past couple of weeks.  I have been trying my best to pump every 3 or 4 hours, and it is just plain exhausting.  I would much rather be playing with him and hanging out than pumping, and so I started letting my routine slip.  As most know, a momma's  milk is a matter of supply and demand - and my supply went down as Nash stopped nursing and I stopped pumping.  I held out hope for a while that Nash was just on another nursing strike - but I doubt that's the case.  Kiddo is done, and thankfully is taking formula well.  He takes Similac Sensitive and seems to do pretty well with it. Parts of me are very sad that he is done nursing, it was such a great experience - but I also know that I will be going back to work eventually, so maybe it is a good thing that it has happened now.  Besides the cuddling and closeness that I miss now that I'm not nursing...the expense of NOT nursing has hit home.  HOLY GOODNESS formula is EXPENSIVE!

Again, we missed the mark with taking a picture with the lion - I promise we will get on that next month!  Enjoy the 6 month cuteness contained in the pictures to follow:

        I'm six months old!
